The Last Hero of Nostalgaia boss

The best indie games to play in October 2022

News around the world is really grim, isn’t it? Well, before we have to go out in an antirad suit and fight huge mutated rats, perhaps we should savour that time to find some indie games to play. So to help you pass the time while waiting for the Mutual Assured Destruction, check out the best indie games to play in October 2022.

It’s been quite a hectic month here on Voxel Smash, but we did find a bit more time to play and review many games, which I’m sure you’ve already appreciated. So, here are five of the best indie games of October 2022 that you should check out this month.

Below, we’ve listed the five best indie games of this month. Check back next month to see our latest picks for the best self-published / indie games you should be getting your grubby little hands on.

The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow

We have already talked at length about the game, along with interviewing the developers, but what a nice surprise it was. Cloak & Dagger have been on a winning spree, with some very interesting games like Sumatra – Fate of Yandi and Football Game, but they seem to have perfected their narrative craft on Hob’s Barrow. Add the great Wadjet Eye voice acting direction and a folk horror tale (that is also quite good for Halloween!), and you have one of the best adventure games you might play this year.

Tinykin

I’ll admit, we were a bit skeptical. From the first images and some of the overall gameplay description, Tinykin seemed to be little more than a Pikmin clone, I mean Tinykin… Pikmin, it’s even in the title! But honestly, that would be kind of a disservice to just label it like that, as Tinykin is definitely a very pleasant 3D platforming experience. There is indeed a bit of that gameplay of having to use tiny creatures to interact with the environment, but it’s in service of exploring a house and solving many different quirky little quests. A great little surprise.

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia boss

It is time for the soulslike genre to bring us something new, not always this tired Lovecraftian/demonic horror, right? Well, leave it to The Last Hero of Nostalgaia (no, not nostalgia, it’s not a typo, trust us) to finally have something new to say. It will be released at the end of the month, and it will be an action-adventure featuring huge bosses and seamless co-op. Did we mention it entirely takes place in a videogame? We love that metanarrative! We will definitely have a review ready for you as soon as possible.

Signalis

Signalis is a classic survival horror experience with gorgeous pixel art. Everything about it screams 90s retro, so fans of Resident Evil and Parasite Eve will want to pay attention to this one. It’s set in a dystopian sci-fi future where you have to unravel a cosmic conspiracy while solving puzzles and surviving along the way.

Signalis comes out on Steam on October 28.

Unusual Findings

If you’re on a nostalgia kick, how does a 1980s-set adventure game sound to you? Unusual Findings follows three friends as they get themselves involved in small-town alien antics by accidentally picking up extraterrestrial signals. Things get even weirder as the trio tries to solve what’s going on in their town.

Fans of Stranger Things, VHS, and awful double denim will want to look out for Unusual Findings when it releases on October 12 on Steam.

Those are all the best indie games of October 2022. Hopefully, you’ve found something you like the look of and give it a whirl. Check out our must-play RPGs and our best underrated survival games guides for more recommendations.
